Caring for a child who has a life shortening condition and multiple, complex disabilities can be both worrying and exhausting.  The Children and Young Adult Service at St Oswald’s Hospice provides specialist short breaks for this group of young people (from birth to 25 years).  Our expert clinical team ensure that every child has the best possible care while their families get a much needed rest.  Most importantly, we make sure that the children have fun with us!  From baking and messy play to hydro and rebound therapy, we make sure each day is packed with activities to stimulate and entertain.

We are also on hand at the end of life, if the child and family wish to be at the Hospice.  We provide care for the whole family in the final days of a child’s life and will continue to offer bereavement support for as long as it is needed.

The Shears Foundation have been with us from the start of our journey .  Having made a generous donation in 2000 which helped us to build our Children’s Unit, they took the time and trouble to get to know and understand our service.  We know that the trustees have a genuine interest in our work and that they share our passion for the wellbeing of children and families.  We are thankful that they appreciate the challenge of funding ongoing running costs and hugely grateful for their many contributions towards nursing salaries.
